چکیده

We study the thermal formation history of four simulated galaxies that were shown in Naab et al. (2007) to reproduce a number of observed properties of elliptical galaxies. The temperature of the gas in the galaxies is steadily increasing with decreasing redshift, although much of the gas has a cooling time shorter than the Hubble time. The gas is being heated and kept hot by gravitational heating processes through the release of potential energy from infalling stellar clumps. The energy is dissipated in supersonic collisions of infalling gas lumps with the ambient gas and through the dynamical capturing of satellite systems causing gravitational wakes that transfer energy to the surrounding gas. Furthermore dynamical friction from the infalling clumps pushes out dark matter, lowering the central dark matter density by up to a factor of two from z = 3 to z = 0. In galaxies in which the late formation history (z . 2) is dominated by minor merging and accretion the energy released (E ∼ 5× 10ergs) from gravitational feedback is sufficient to form red and dead elliptical galaxies by z ∼ 1 even in the absence of supernova and AGN feedback. Adding Environmental Gas Physics to the Semi-analytic Method for Galaxy Formation: Gravitational Heating

We present results of an attempt to include more detailed gas physics motivated from hydrodynamical simulations within semi-analytic models (SAM) of galaxy formation, focusing on the role that environmental effects play. The main difference to previous SAMs is that we include ’gravitational’ heating of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) by the net surplus of gravitational potential energy released ...

Origin of Bimodality in Galaxy Properties: Cold and Hot Flows, Clustering and Feedback

We address the origin of the robust bi-modality observed in galaxy properties about a characteristic stellar mass ∼ 3× 10M⊙. Less massive galaxies tend to be ungrouped blue star-forming disks, with properties correlated along a “fundamental line". More massive galaxies are typically grouped red old-star spheroids on a “fundamental plane" and hosting AGNs. M/L is at a minimum near the critical m...

Modelling the Galaxy Bimodality: Shutdown Above a Critical Halo Mass

We reproduce the blue and red sequences in the observed joint distribution of colour and magnitude for galaxies at low and high redshifts using hybrid N-body/semianalytic simulations of galaxy formation. The match of model and data is achieved by mimicking the effects of cold flows versus shock heating coupled to feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGNs), as predicted by Dekel & Birnboim (200...

ماده تاریک یا دینامیک دیگر؟

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...
